Former Kolkata mayor and Trinamool Congress MLA Sovan Chatterjee joined the BJP on Wednesday.
Chatterjee was accompanied by his close associate Baisakhi Banerjee. Sources said the decks for his joining the BJP have been cleared by the state leadership. Chatterjee has made multiple trips to the national capital in recent times, holding talks with the BJP top brass.
Despite repeated efforts to get him back into the TMC fold by party chief Mamata Banerjee, Chatterjee has remained unmoved. Banerjee’s emissary, Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee met him multiple times but failed to break ice.
Before leaving for Delhi, Chatterjee sent his resignation from the post of chairman of the West Bengal Assembly’s Standing Committee on Fisheries on Tuesday.
Over the past several months, the TMC leader had been keeping a low profile, distancing himself completely from the Trinamool Congress. In November last year, Chatterjee was asked to step down as Kolkata mayor by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The rift between Banerjee and Chatterjee, who was once considered her trusted aide, had started growing after reports of problems in his personal life hit the headlines.
There were also allegations that Chatterjee was not taking his responsibilities seriously, either as a mayor nor as a minister. He was the Minister of Fire & Engineering, Housing, Environment in the Mamata Banerjee government.
