Rs.1 lakh cr deposited in Jan Dhan Yojna bank accounts

More than Rs 1 lakh crore have been deposited in over 36 crore bank accounts opened under the PMJDY, reveals an RTI.

According to government data, the total balance in PMJDY accounts stood at ₹1,00,495.95 crore as on July 3.

The total number of beneficiaries is 36.06 crore in basic bank accounts under the scheme launched in August 2014.

The number of zero balance accounts under PMJDY declined from 16 percent to 14.37 percent. The average balance is upwards of ₹2,000 in most banks.

The scheme is primarily aimed at the poorer sections who are unable to have access to the banking system.

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2014. It has also entered the Guinness World Records for most bank accounts.
