The drug controller of India on Tuesday said to public health alert on ranitidine; a low-cost price medicine used commonly to counter stomach acidity.
Some drug regulators have found it to contain a chemical compound that can cause cancer. Drugs controller V.G Somani has issued a directive to all states alerting them on ranitidine.
Ranitidine medicine contains a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) at low levels. IARC as probably carcinogenic to humans.
This medicine is also available in different formulations like tablets and injections.
Ranitidine is a prescription drug. This means a doctor must have a prescription to buy this medicine. However, this drug is readily available without a prescription. The chemicals in this drug are associated with cancer risk.
