PAN-Aadhar linking date extended to 31 December

1 Mins read

The last date to link the Permanent Account Number (PAN) and the Aadhaar card for filing of income tax returns has been extended to December 31; a Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) of Ministry of Finance order said. The earlier deadline to link PAN-Aadhaar was September 30.

The CBDT had earlier made it mandatory to link 12-digit Aadhaar number with the 10-digit PAN card in order to file income tax returns. The agency had also issued a deadline for the PAN-Aadhaar linking i.e., September 30. The last date has now been extended to December 31.

For income tax purposes it has been made mandatory to link the page with the source of income. It is worth mentioning that in September last year, the Supreme Court said that the Center’s flagship base scheme was valid and that biometric ID would be mandatory for obtaining a status page for filing IT returns.

According to Section 139A (2) of the Income Tax Department, on July 1, anyone who has a PAN and is eligible to receive a credit must lodge a Permanent Link with the PAN.

The CBDT had said there were reports that those PANs which are not linked with Aadhaar number by March 31 may be invalidated, following which the matter was considered by the government and the date extended till September 30.
