- The charge will come into effect from October 10, impacting Jio’s 35 million customers
- Jio customers will have to get a top voucher for calls on other networks, the company will provide free data on voucher cost
- Jio to Jio calls, internet calls and incoming calls will be free as before
Customers of Reliance Jio will now have to pay 6 paise per minute to call another company’s network. For this, they have to top up the interconnect use charge (IUC). However, the higher the top up, the higher the data will be compensated for. This rule will go into effect on October 10. The company released the information on Wednesday.
Telecom companies have to pay IUC charges to each other. It may seem like a charge to make a call to a different network. For example, if a Jio customer calls an Airtel network, Jio has to pay the IUC charge to the Airtel company. Its rate is determined by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
Jio said that every Internet call, incoming call and Jio to Jio and landline calling will be free as before. Trio reduced the IUC charge from October 14, 2017 to 6 paise. It was proposed to be completely abolished from January 1, 2020, but TRI has brought back its consultation paper. So this charge can continue even further.
Jio says in the last three years it has paid Rs 13,500 crore to another operator for IUC charges. So far, the burden has not been on consumers. But the decision has to be made in compulsion after December 31, fearing the charges will continue. Jio’s network receives 25-30 million missed calls daily.
