President Donald Trump has formally withdrawn the United States from the World Health Organization, making good on threats over the UN body’s response to the coronavirus, a senator said Tuesday.
“Congress was informed that POTUS had formally withdrawn the US from the @WHO in the middle of a pandemic,” Senator Robert Menendez, the top Democrat on the Committee on Foreign Relations, wrote on Twitter.
The letter to the UN is very short, about three sentences, we are told by a source briefed on the correspondence and it will trigger a one-year timeline for withdrawals. The source also warned, however, that they could not confirm that they saw the letter’s final edition.
Although politicians on both sides have long cited structural concerns with the WHO, several have also condemned the President’s decision to withdraw amid a global pandemic that took place once in a century.
The WHO has come under heavy criticism over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
