Airtel becomes the first operator to launches 'Ultra-Fast 4G services in Andamans

Bharti Airtel has become the first telecom operator to launch ‘Ultra-Fast 4G’ services in Andaman and Nicobar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC), connecting Chennai and Port Blair, on Monday, via videoconferencing. The submarine cable will connect Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock), Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island and Rangat.

The rollout of the ₹1,224 crore underwater project comes amid concerns over national security following the India-China geopolitical tensions.

“The fiber link will be a game changer for the region and unlock the true potential of 4G and even 5G in future for customers.

“We are grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister for taking the time to launch this key digital infrastructure,” Mittal said.

Airtel was the first private operator to launch mobile services in the islands. With today’s launch of ‘Ultra-Fast 4G’ network, Airtel looks forward to further strengthening its bond with customers on the islands,” Airtel said in a statement.

The 2,313 kilometre undersea cable will connect seven islands of Andaman other than the capital city Port Blair. The seven islands are Swaraj Deep, Long Island, Rangat, Little Andaman, Kamorta, Car Nicobar and Greater Nicobar.
