WWE wrestler James “Kamala” Harris has died. WWE confirmed his death on their official webpage He was 70.
“WWE is saddened to learn that James Harris, known to WWE fans as Kamala, has passed away at age 70,” the WWE tweeted.
His career was at its peak during the WWF-now-WWE’s ’80s heydays of Jake “The Snake” Roberts and the Hulk Hogan. He fought Andre the Giant in a series of matches before he steps back from the scene in 1984.
As Kamala, he portrayed a fearsome and simpleminded Ugandan who wrestled barefoot in war paint and a loincloth and approached the ring wearing an African mask and carrying a spear and shield.
According to reports, Harris suffered many health issues and both his legs were amputated in recent years due to complications with diabetes.
Other wrestlers took to social media Sunday to honor Harrisusing the hashtag #ripkamala.
Former wrestler Scotty Riggs with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) tweeted that he never met or knew Harris, but he understood his impact.
