Va Tech Wabag, a leading Indian Multinational pure play water technology firm, has received the prestigious Global Water Award for its 45 MLD Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) facility in Koyambedu, Chennai. The plant bagged the Distinction Award in the category “The Year’s Wastewater Plan.”

The TTRO plant is one of India’s largest and most technologically advanced water reuse plants planned and developed by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) consortium of WABAG and IDE Technologies. The initiative marks a decisive step toward public water recycling, thereby fostering an effective and viable model for urban water management.

The TTRO plant uses a multistage treatment scheme which includes Rapid Gravity Sand Filters, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis and Ozonation. In addition, it is India’s first reuse facility to use ozonation for disinfection.

The project will improve water resilience & sustainability for Chennai in the midst of ongoing struggles with drought and water shortage in the city.

Every year, TTRO Plant will help free up more than 16 million m3 of freshwater to secure water supply for the population of over 10 million Chennai people. The plant makes Chennai the first Indian city to reuse more than 20% of its treated wastewater.

Water Recycle & Reuse is projected to be the key driver of growth, opening up significant business opportunities in the upcoming period. Many states in India have introduced Reuse policies aimed at recycling 70% of Treated Waste Water by 2025 & 100% of Treated Waste Water by 2030, providing further impetus to the Indian market. Therefore, it opens doors to WABAG in Recycle & Reuse for Municipal-Industrial Partnerships for a multi-billion – dollar market, in line with the segment’s government policies.

The Koyambedu TTRO project further strengthens the role of WABAG as a established Global Leader in Recycle & Reuse, a segment that is expected to have the highest growth potential over the next three years. WABAG is well positioned to capitalize on this opportunity in the segment of water reuse.
